Sustainable development of bamboo industry in Vietnam
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development identified bamboo is one of the major species in the export of NTFP, poverty reduction and rural economic development in Vietnam in 2011-2015 and reach at 2020.
At a workshop on development of Vietnam bamboo, held on 22/1, Ho Xuan Hung, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said the trend of development, if a year bamboo industry growth 10-15% by 2020, demand for raw materials is expected to require about 100,000 tons or more rattan and bamboo at least one billion trees every year. Meanwhile, every year, Vietnam has to import about 33,000 tonnes of rattan.
Therefore, for sustainable development of this sector, in addition to about 1.6 million hectares of protected natural bamboo, the target of 2020 would have planting around 165.000ha.
The exploitation and development of bamboo will be attached to the conservation of biodiversity, with the development of biotechnology science and technology and processing of forest products, while ensuring income from growing Bamboo accounts for 20-30% of economic families in rural and mountainous areas.
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also proposed several mechanisms and policies to develop materials such as bamboo plant support, support capital investment in planting and protecting forests, bamboo and rattan. Forest owners are entitled to 100% extraction products after deducting the payments prescribed by the State.
In Vietnam, bamboo, rattan is one of the non-timber products have a high commercial value. The total export turnover has increased from rattan and bamboo on the $ 48 million in 1999 to 224.7 million in 2008 and is expected this year this figure will reach $ 300 million. Bamboo and Rattan Products Vietnam is now available in 120 markets around the world.
NTFPs, including rattan, bamboo attached to the lives of nearly 24 million ethnic minorities, of which more than one million people with income from rattan.
Bamboo and rattan industry also has the largest number of villages with more than 720 villages, representing 24% of more than 2,000 craft villages of Vietnam attracted more than 340,000 employees. /.
